Getting Holiday Ready With These Skincare Tips

The holidays are always a magical time: fresh snow blanketing the ground, family and friends gathering together to eat delicious meals, and cold, dry air that makes your skin feel like sandpaper.

Wait, what?

Thanks to winter’s chilly and skin-stressing air, some of that holiday magic tends to fall a bit short when fulfilling skincare wishes. Though you can’t change how mother nature behaves during the colder months, you can find ways to combat it and holiday stress with a proper holiday skincare routine. You can also give the gift of glowing skin with this holiday gift guide.

If you’re looking for skin with enough radiance to outshine the star on the tree this season, read on for four holiday skincare tips to get the perfect glow!

#1 Apply Hydrating SPF

Topping off our list of holiday skincare essentials is SPF.

SPF? In the winter?

Yes, it may sound surprising but using SPF year-round is a vital step to reduce sun damage, signs of aging, and hyperpigmentation. Though you probably use sunscreen in the summer months to avoid a painful sunburn, the sun, even when it’s cloudy outside, can damage your skin. Despite shorter days and longer nights, the sun’s UV rays have a very long reach when it comes to threatening your glowing skin.

UV rays come in three different forms:

  • UVA – UVA rays have the longest wavelength of the UV spectrum. This means a large amount of UVA rays penetrate the earth’s atmosphere and reach your skin no matter the weather. The strength of these waves allows them to penetrate the skin's dermis and cause fine lines and wrinkles.
  • UVB – UVB rays have slightly shorter wavelengths, allowing them to penetrate the skin’s most outer layer: the epidermis. Damage to the epidermis is what causes the familiar symptoms of too much sun—sunburn, tanning, and skin cancer.
  • UVC – With the shortest wavelength, UVC rays don’t penetrate the earth’s atmosphere enough to reach the skin.

While many people can recognize when they’re catching too many UVB rays, UVA exposure is a bit trickier to spot. While you may not feel the sun damaging your skin, UVA rays can cause skin aging on a molecular level even in the coldest of months. That’s why it’s so important to wear SPF anytime you’re in the sun.

Not All SPF is Created Equal

The skin of the face is particularly delicate, so you’ll want to use an SPF that’s gentle and preferably formulated for facial use. Our HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum SPF 36 is a fantastic choice for UV protection during the holiday season for several reasons:

  • Tinted – This SPF acts almost like a primer, adding a hint of color to the skin and evening out tone. The formula can leave you with that coveted summer glow without the damage of UV rays.
  • Protection – While many makeup products only offer SPF 15 at the most, HydraTint contains SPF 36. Any SPF level above 30 will block 98% of the sun’s rays,1 leaving you ultra protected.
  • Water-resistant – With a water resistance of up to 40 minutes, you won’t lose any protection when the rain and snow start falling.

#2 Use Products That Have TriHex Technology®

Adding TriHex Technology® to your winter skincare routine can help boost two of the most important ingredients in your skin’s health: collagen and antioxidants. TriHex Technology® is a blend of active peptides and key ingredients that works with the skin to clear out damaged elastin and collagen and support the skin’s natural ability to produce new elastin and collagen. This trademarked technology can be found in 7 of our skincare products.

    Collagen

Collagen is a protein that creates the inner structures of your skin cells and is the building block for firm, smooth skin. A lack of collagen can cause fine lines, wrinkles, and droopiness.

So how does TrixHex Technology® fit into the collagen equation? Your skin cells need to produce collagen.

When applying products with TriHex Technology® topically to the skin, it promotes the assembly of collagen fibers. This can lead to plumper, more youthful-looking, and healthier skin.

    Antioxidants

TriHex Technology® also supports the fight against one of the biggest enemies of youthful skin—free radicals.

Free radicals are broken molecules that wreak havoc in the body. Free radicals love to wreck the structures of your skin that keep your face plump, smooth, and firm. But that’s where TriHex Technology steps in.

TriHex has antioxidant properties. And antioxidants, are essentially a skin health SWAT team designed to eradicate free radicals and help your skin look its best.2

Consider adding one of these products with TriHex Technology® to your skincare routine.

    1. Regenerating Skin Nectar
    2. Restorative Skin Complex
    3. TransFORM Body Treatment
    4. INhance Post Injection Serum

#3 Look For Hydrating Silver Mushroom as an Ingredient

We’re sure you’ve heard of hyaluronic acid, but have you heard of Silver Mushroom? Silver Mushroom is 400x more hydrating than hyaluronic acid and its particles are also smaller than hyaluronic acid, so it penetrates the skin more easily.

Silver Mushroom is also an ingredient that can help create a natural hydration film on the skin. Its properties support overall skin health by helping combat dehydrated skin and balancing optimal hydration. This can enable the skin to further develop elasticity.

Our Renewal Retinol is a highly recommended anti-aging product by dermatologists because one of its main ingredients is Tremella Fuciformis Sporocarp Extract (Silver Mushroom Extract). This makes our Renewal Retinol less irritating than many other retinol products and significantly more hydrating.

We have 4 other products with Silver Mushroom that all contain TriHex Technology®:

    1. Restorative Eye Treatment
    2. Restorative Skin Complex
    3. Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer
    4. Restorative Neck Complex

Silver Mushroom and Hyaluronic Acid Production

Hyaluronic acid is something your body naturally makes on its own. It can be found in several layers of the skin, including the dermis and epidermis. When the skin lacks a proper level of hyaluronic acid, the epidermis loses its ability to bind and retain moisture molecules. This can lead to dry, flaky skin. Similarly, the dermis struggles to maintain collagen fibers, causing the skin to look less plump and lose elasticity below the surface.3

Silver Mushroom supports natural hyaluronic acid levels resulting in improved skin plumpness and moisturization and healthy adipose tissue resulting in more youthful volume.

#4 Use A Daily Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer

The cold winter air is notorious for drying out the skin. When the thermostat starts plummeting, so does the humidity in the air. Dry winter air tends to draw out your skin’s moisture, causing a dull appearance and an uncomfortable, tight feeling as you walk through a winter wonderland. You might not find relief indoors either—the air produced by indoor heating typically lacks moisture as well.4

Though you may have a go-to moisturizer during the warmer months, you may need to kick your moisturizer up a notch when the temperature begins to drop. If you feel your skin reacting to the seasonal changes, don’t be afraid to respond with a thicker moisturizer.

Our Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer uses TriHex technology® to help promote skin’s elasticity and moisture. The way this unique blend of ingredients works can be broken down into three steps:

    1. Remove – Peptides and botanicals remove older, damaged collagen and elastin that can clump together and cause dull aging skin.
    2. Rebuild – The stimulation created by this formula not only promotes the removal of old collagen and elastin, but also the rebuilding of new fibers in the skin.
    3. Replenish – By using the nourishing moisturizer regularly, you can consistently supply your skin cells with all the ingredients it needs for fabulous skin.

In addition to collagen production, our Nourishing Moisturizer’s formula can calm skin without clogging pores. This product made with some of the best ingredients for dry, winter skin, including:

    • Oat kernel extract
    • Caprylic
    • Linoleic acid
    • Phospholipids

These ingredients work together to replace lost moisture and build up a stronger barrier between the skin and its environment. You wouldn’t let your kids go out in December without a warm coat, so why let your face go unprotected, too? Don't forget to moisturize for healthy skin!
