Being quarantined and told to self-isolate is not an ideal situation, but there are always silver linings! While quarantining may come with lots of feelings, ranging from stress to boredom, loneliness, and even grief, as many people mourn the loss of social interactions and canceled plans, there’s always an upside.
Many people are using this unexpected time at home to reconnect with their family, focus on health and self-improvement, or spend some energy helping others. It’s also a great opportunity to socialize in a creative way. Virtual happy hours, coffee dates, and work out sessions are booming right now!
Not to mention, what better time than when quarantined to have a DIY self care day? Self care comes in many different forms, whether it be a daily skincare routine, reading a new book, taking a bath, journaling, etc. Whatever your interests are, you can always benefit from a day dedicated to your health!
DIY Self Care Activities While Quarantined
It’s easy for the days to blend together when stuck self-isolating, but you can combat this by being intentional about keeping a schedule and routine. That means wake up and go to bed at the same time each day, stick with a basic skincare routine in the morning and the evening, schedule regular exercise, and block out times to “work,” whatever “work” looks like for you while in quarantine.
If you don’t have work, there are still lots of activities you can engage in while cooped up at home that can be fun and beneficial, and even better, help relieve boredom and cabin fever. One of the main benefits of self care is that it makes you feel good, so do whatever makes YOU feel good. This day is all about you!
Pamper Yourself Spa-Style
Quarantine is the perfect time to engage in a little DIY spa day or at-home wellness retreat. We know you’re missing your nail techs, estheticians, and hair stylists, but that doesn’t mean you have to lose out on your favorite self care activities! Everyone has different preferences, but here are some ideas for your at-home spa day:
1. Give Yourself A Manicure
In times of social distancing, what can you do if you are used to going to the nail salon weekly or biweekly? Depending on what kind of manicure you currently have and what kind you will find relaxing to give yourself, you have a few options. To take off gel manicures, we recommend using the gel nail polish remover foils from Target. For shaping and painting, the tool box nail kit from Olive & June is your one-stop shop. If seeing a beautiful color on your nails will make you happy, but the time it takes to paint your nails won’t, then a pop-on manicure from Static Nails is calling your name! If you have a daughter, you can also make it a fun bonding experience, while still having it be self care.
2. Create A Bath Ritual
You’ve probably taken a bath before, but have you done a bath ritual? A bath ritual is so much more than just a hot soak in the tub and lighting a few candles. Rituals allow us to elevate what would normally be an everyday or basic experience into something more impactful. Through mindfulness, you can create a cleansing and soothing experience that will help rid your mind of negativity while taking care of your body and soul. Maybe you’re struggling to cope with the current pandemic or struggling to stay sane. Maybe you’ve lost motivation due to increased anxiety and stress. Regardless of what you’re going through, a bath ritual is a potential solution worth testing. Create your own unique ritual by selecting what fits with your intention and needs:
Pink Himalayan Sea Salt
This magical salt is made up of 84 minerals that all work together to balance your pH by reducing the acidic levels in the body. The salt also helps soothe irritated skin, leaving your skin feeling soft and youthful. You will need to put a minimum of two cups into the water to ensure your bath has a high enough salt content for the minerals to soak into your body.
The first thing that comes to mind when you think of baking soda might be cooking delicious baked goods. However, baking soda has a variety of different benefits, aside from making your taste buds happy. Anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in baking soda act as a good exfoliator while also helping slightly shrink the size of your pores, preventing dirt from entering them.
Do you have a favorite candle scent? Is there a certain smell that brings you joy? Not only can the scents of the candles make a positive impact on your mood and your energy, but so can the colors.
Blue – combines peace and patience for emotional healing
Green – corresponds to growth and attracts an earthly well-being
Silver – represents dreaming, love, feminine energy, rest and healing
Black – absorbs negativity, or marks the end of a phase in your life
Pink – evokes self love, self forgiveness, and growing in compassion
Orange – draws out ambition and creativity to help strengthen your individuality
Flowers are one of our favorite forms of self care for women. Sprinkling rose petals in the bath and having them float around you sounds luxurious and exciting, but you must be mindful about the potential draining issue. If you don’t want to do the extra clean up, we recommend using dried flowers or herbs and putting them in a cheese cloth bag. This allows you to soak in the power and reap all the benefits of these amazing plants without the extra clean up.
Roses – for hydrating for the skin
Basil – for managing your temper
Lavender – for calming the mind and relieving stress
Rosemary – for boosting circulation
Orchid – for reducing fine lines and wrinkles
Sage – for cleansing, clearing and releasing
Eucalyptus leaves – for stimulating your brain and bringing clarity to your visions
You can even add a nice tray with your favorite book, a nice glass of wine. Don’t be afraid to get creative. Add things that make you happy to this relaxing bath ritual!
3. Give Your Face Some Daily Love
Depending on who you ask, having a skincare routine can mean a thousand different things. When we hear skincare, we think about science-backed ways to improve the look, feel, and health of your skin. Although we can’t slow down time, a personalized daily skincare routine can help manage dry or oily skin as well as reduce the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, fine lines, and sun damage. Many people also find their skincare regimens to have some mental health benefits. They realized how easy it is to build healthy habits and do nice things for themselves through this self-care benefit. One DIY-self care product that we use every day is the Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer with TriHex Technology®.
Not only does it keep your skin nourished and hydrated, but it has key botanical properties that calm the skin and a unique combination of peptides that target collagen and elastin.
4. Make Your Own Body Scrub
You can make your own body scrub by using ingredients you already have in your home! The first thing you'll need is a mason jar (or other container if you don't have one). You'll use the mason jar to mix all of your ingredients and keep the body scrub fresh for future uses.
Here Is What You'll Need:
- 2 Cups Sugar
- 1/4 Cup Coconut Oil
- 1 Tbsp. Lemon Juice
- 1/2 Tbsp. Honey
- 1 Tsp. Apple Cider Vinegar
How To Mix:
Pour both cups of sugar into your mason jar or container, then add in coconut oil and lemon juice. Your last step will be adding the honey and apple cider vinegar and mixing all of the ingredients together for a nourishing and exfoliating body scrub!
How To Use:
Because your skin is delicate, you should only use body scrubs once or twice per week. Make sure you always thoroughly wet your skin before you apply the body scrub. Applying the scrub right after a shower or bath makes that step easy! Next, rinse off your skin and pat it dry. You should immediately apply a moisturizing body lotion to help lock in moisture as your final step.
Hop On Zoom Or FaceTime
Sometimes, there’s no better way to care for yourself than to connect with another person. Once your DIY spa day has come to an end, take the time during social distancing to hop on FaceTime or Zoom with your best friends or your family and have a little virtual party! You can also use the time to check in on people you haven’t spoken to in a while. Not only will their spirits be lifted, but it will lift yours too, by making others smile.
If you have a few friends willing to get together, plan a Zoom party to connect and inject a little fun into the day. You can even make it themed! Zoom also allows you to add backgrounds or play trivia, which can make the virtual get-together even more entertaining. Don’t allow self-isolating to get to you because you’re never truly alone!
Have A Family Dance-Off
What better way to expend excess energy towards the end of your day than to dance it out? No one is too old (or young) to participate! Gather up the crew and challenge them to a dance-off right in the living room. Pick some great (or goofy, depending on your mood) tunes, and crank them up. Take turns dancing and have everyone vote for their favorite. The winner gets the last bowl of ice cream; the loser has to do the dishes after dinner. If you’re tech-savvy and brave, TikTok has funny dance video tutorials you can learn together and post for a laugh.
Journaling is a great self care activity to end your night with. Some like to journal about things they are thankful for each day, while others prefer to use their journal more as a brain dump for all their cares and anxieties. Sometimes it helps to get all those worries down on paper and out of your head so that you take a step back and can focus on what’s most important. Some people love bullet journaling, which means quarantine could be a great time for you to dip your feet into creating your own bullet journal.
However you choose to practice self-care, make it count. This day is all about YOU! There are so many ways to practice self-care and so many reasons why you should. If you’re looking for additional tips on healthy skin and a healthy lifestyle, we’re here to help!
